Cyber Scam Defense: How to Protect Yourself from Digital Fraud

The rising tide of cyber fraud highlights how easily scammers exploit everyday digital conveniences like messaging apps and mobile payments. Because fraudsters rely heavily on manipulative tactics like fake job offers, stock market tips, and malicious QR codes to drain accounts, building strong personal defense habits is essential. Never Scan QR Codes to Receive Money: QR codes are strictly designed to transfer money out of your account, not into it. If someone asks you to scan a code to accept a payment or refund, it is an immediate red flag. Verify Job & Investment Claims: Scammers frequently use WhatsApp, Telegram, and fake ads to pitch "high-return" stock tips or easy work-from-home jobs. Always research the firm independently through official channels and never transfer money to secure a job or high-yield investment. Double-Check Payment Requests: Treat any urgent request for money—even from a known contact or business—with immediate skepticism. Call the sender directly using a verified phone number before transferring funds. Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): Protect your banking apps, UPI profiles, and social media accounts by enabling 2FA/MFA. Never share OTPs, PINs, or passwords with anyone claiming to be bank officials or customer support. Report Suspicious Numbers & Activity: Use spam-blocking tools like Truecaller to flag scam calls and messages. If you suspect fraud or fall victim, immediately report the incident to the National Cyber Crime Helpline at 1930 or file an e-FIR via the official cybercrime portal (cybercrime.gov.in) so police can freeze fraudulent accounts quickly.
