scam that backfired on them
I want to share my experience. Two days ago, I received a supposed call from Movistar and the national credit registry. I am a foreigner in the country where I reside. I spoke with two people who claimed that my phone number, specifically my WhatsApp, was being used by three people on different devices to carry out supposed scams. I was surprised because three months ago I activated a prepaid plan with a certain amount, and the same person told me that the payment would increase over those months, which actually happened. They had my data and my phone number registration up to date. I didn't understand why they asked me to confirm my details, so I refused until they asked me to log into my Nequi account, a wallet used in Colombia, which is the only account I have and I rarely use it, to verify my balance and if everything was fine. After talking with the supposed Nequi agent, another person who had called from the beginning told me the call was being recorded. I told them I was recording too. They asked what apps I used, like wallets or banks, and said I had to clarify which bank I had. Then they told me to turn off my phone but that I needed a code that would arrive on my WhatsApp. I didn't know what the code was for or when to turn off the phone. I became suspicious. After turning off my phone, I couldn't wait even 15 minutes before I understood and saw on my son's phone a message saying "Good afternoon," a message I did not send. When I turned my phone back on, my WhatsApp didn't open directly; it asked for passwords and to restart WhatsApp. I restarted it and started receiving calls from my contacts asking what was happening. I spent the whole day communicating with several people and then I saw what they were trying to do: take money from my contacts. They sent messages pretending I needed money for an emergency. Thank God I managed to unlink that person from my WhatsApp. But now I will try to be more cautious with these calls. I have a problem: I am now distrustful of answering calls, so I decided to download this app for my security.
