SIM SWAPPING ATTACKS
A SIM swapping attacks occurs when a cybercriminal fraudulently tricks a mobile network provider into transferring a victim's phone number to a new SIM card under the attacker's control. By posing as the legitimate subscriber, the hacker utilizes stolen personal details—often gathered from data breaches, phishing scams, or social media—to convince customer support representatives that their original SIM card was lost or damaged. Once the telecommunications carrier completes the transfer, the victim’s physical smartphone loses cellular service instantly, effectively cutting off their ability to place calls or receive text messages. Consequently, all incoming traffic, including sensitive notifications and critical two-factor authentication (2FA) security codes, is instantly redirected straight to the attacker's device. Armed with these intercepted verification passcodes, cybercriminals can bypass multi-factor authentication defenses to hijack bank accounts, cryptocurrency wallets, and private email accounts. Furthermore, attackers frequently use access to compromised accounts to reset passwords across other platforms, lock out legitimate users, and extract personal data for further identity theft or extortion. To reduce the risk of falling victim to SIM swapping, individuals should secure their mobile carrier accounts with strong, unique PINs, limit the public sharing of personal information, and switch from SMS-based two-factor authentication to dedicated authenticator apps or physical hardware security keys.
