WhatsApp bans 9400 digital arrest scam accounts in India in major crackdown

WhatsApp just pulled off a major crackdown in India and it is bigger than most people think. Over 9400 accounts linked to digital arrest scams were banned during a focused 12 week investigation that started in January 2026. This is not speculation. The numbers come from official submissions to the Supreme Court by the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Attorney General. Major outlets like NDTV, The Hindu, LiveLaw, and Economic Times are all reporting the same figures. Here is what really matters 👇 This was not about removing a few reported accounts. Only around 17 accounts were directly flagged in early reports. Instead of stopping there, WhatsApp tracked the entire network. • Followed links between accounts • Mapped coordinated scam groups • Identified operators including ones based in Southeast Asia like Cambodia • Removed full scam ecosystems instead of just visible accounts This means groups, channels, and connected accounts involved in fake law enforcement calls and digital arrest extortion schemes were taken down together. And this is not the end. • Work is ongoing on SIM binding for stronger identity checks • Alerts for suspicious new accounts are being developed • Detection systems are becoming more proactive 👉 What this really means is a shift from reactive action to network level enforcement. Still, do not relax. These scams keep evolving. The best protection is awareness. If someone claims you are under digital arrest and asks for money, it is a scam. Real authorities do not operate like this. Stay alert.
