If by SMS scam you mean fraudulent SMS messages, this is generally called SMS phishing / “smishing.” The goal is usually to make you click a malicious link, reveal OTP/PIN/password/card details, install an app, or transfer money. SMS Scam — How, Why, What & Safety Guide 1. What is an SMS scam? A fraudulent SMS designed to impersonate a bank, courier, government department, telecom company, KYC service, job portal, etc. The message creates a problem or an opportunity and gives you a reason to act immediately. Examples: “Your bank account will be blocked today.” “KYC expired. Update now.” “Your electricity connection will be disconnected.” “Your parcel is pending. Pay ₹25.” “You have won a reward.” “Traffic challan pending — pay immediately.” “SIM will be deactivated.” “Income Tax refund pending — click here.” 2. How does the scam work? Typical chain: SMS → Fake link/phone number → Fake website/person → Information or access → Money stolen They may try to obtain: OTP UPI PIN ATM/debit/credit-card details CVV Internet-banking password Aadhaar/PAN/KYC documents Personal information Access to your phone Remote-access application installation UPI payment/“collect request” Direct bank transfer RBI specifically warns against clicking suspicious SMS links and sharing OTP, PIN, CVV or passwords. RBI Kehta Hai ***. Why do SMS scams work? Scammers exploit human psychology, not necessarily technical vulnerabilities. Urgency: “Do this within 30 minutes.” Fear: “Account will be blocked.” Authority: Pretending to be RBI, police, bank, TRAI, courier, government, etc. Curiosity: “You have received ₹5,000.” Greed: Cashback, lottery, investment opportunity. Convenience: “Click here to complete KYC.” Personalisation: They may already know your name, bank, vehicle number, delivery details, etc. Knowing some information about you does not prove that the SMS is genuine. 4. Biggest red flags 🚨 Treat an SMS as suspicious if it: Contains a link you weren't expecting Asks you to pay money urgently Requests an OTP/PIN/CVV/password Says your account will be blocked immediately Asks you to install an APK/app Tells you to call an unfamiliar number Uses a shortened URL Has strange spelling/grammar Uses a suspicious domain Offers an unusually large reward/refund Asks you to scan a QR code to receive money Asks you to approve a UPI collect/request-money transaction Claims to be from a government organisation but directs you to an unrelated website 5. The Golden Rules NEVER share these with anyone OTP | UPI PIN | ATM PIN | CVV | Password | Card details Not with: Bank employees Police RBI officials Telecom employees Courier employees “Customer-care executives” Friends or relatives RBI explicitly advises that even bank staff should not receive your OTP, PIN, CVV or password. RBI Kehta Hai NEVER click first and verify later Instead: SMS → Stop → Open official app/website yourself → Verify Don't use the link supplied in the SMS. For example, if an SMS says: “Your SBI account will be blocked. Click here.” Don't click it. Open your bank's official app yourself and check whether anything actually needs attention. 6. Very important: SMS sender name is NOT proof A message appearing to come from: BANK-XYZ doesn't automatically make it genuine. Scammers can exploit: Spoofing Fraudulent SMS headers Compromised accounts/systems Look-alike domains Social engineering
