Fake Money Transfer (fake SMS/screenshot): Scammers often send a fake SMS or screenshot suggesting that funds have been received, when in reality, no money has actually been transferred. Even if money has genuinely arrived, it might have originated from a stolen account or a fraudulent source. If you send back ₹10,000 from your own funds, the bank may later reverse (cancel) the original fraudulent transaction. Consequently, you would lose double the amount—the ₹10,000 you sent plus the ₹10,000 the bank reversed. Scammers may use your account to launder illicit funds (reroute money), potentially implicating you in a police case without your knowledge.

Check your bank balance: First, verify via your official banking app or passbook whether funds have actually been credited to your account or if you have merely received a fake message. Do not touch the funds (Hold): Do not spend the money or send it back directly to the person. Contact your bank immediately: Speak to your bank's customer care or visit the branch to inform them that you have received funds from an unknown source. Ask the bank to verify the transaction and reverse the funds to the source account. Inform the other party: If the person asks for the money back, tell them directly—"I have informed my bank; the bank itself will transfer the money back to your account."

Do not make the mistake of transferring money by yourself, let all the work be done through your bank.
